Favourite thing to do in my job Learn about new things, meet new people and have my ideas challenged.
I am an educator, technologist and creator.
I live in Cambridgeshire and am a member of local Archery and Canoeing clubs. I also love going to Zumba, I have been known to Zumba down our High Street. My favourite thing is probably cycling, I am a Sustrans volunteer Ranger and help guide cycle rides. This summer I am taking on 5 challenges for various charities.
My favourite films are the Star Wars series and Indiana Jones. Growing up I also loved Top Gun and The Italian Job.
Educational Data Scientist
I am currently working on an exploratory learning analytics project. My job involves identifying what data my organisation collects and trying to work out if it can be used to tell us anything about how our students learn.
I am also working on a project to help design some online IT courses for Researchers – Research Programming and High Performance Computing.
My Typical Day
Bicycles, trains and computers.
My day starts my waling or cycling to my local train station. In the summer I like to swim outdoors so 2/3 times a week I use a Santander bike to cycle to Hyde Park from Kings Cross. Once I’ve swam, I then cycle back to my office at Euston.
Once I’m in the office I will check emails and my calendar for the day. If I am working on the learning design project I will meet up with those providing the content for the course.
If I am working on the learning analytics project I will either be analysing or visualing data. I will also be reading interesting articles, soemtimes I go to conferences and events about data science and data ethics. Alternatively I could also be preparing a proposal for a conference or preparing a talk that I am giving. I will also talk to colleagues in my immediate vacinity and have an informal catch-up with my manager.
What I'd do with the money
Improve data literacy
The Royal Society identified that only 8% of the population know of machine learning, yet, this is used by tools we use daily. In order to properly understand data protection and give truly informed consent as to the GDPR this needs to be improved. Also, a better understanding of charts and statistics will help people engage more knowledgeably with data presented by the press and other organisations. This will also help students engage with and produce better research.
I would like to use the funds to help develop materials for students around data literacy, open data and machine learning.
