I was actually talking about this with some colleagues yesterday, so it’s a really interesting question.
For me it depends on what is being tested on the animals. I would say that testing cosmetics is a bit unecessary, but testing medicines helps make sure they’re safe for humans to use, so in my opinion it’s still important to do.
Science is constantly finding new ways to do things though so maybe in the future we’ll be able to avoid using animals altogether

Personally i think testing cosmetics (eye liner etc) on animals is totally unnecessary as cosmetics arent essential to our lives. We dont need cosmetics to live healthy lives.

But testing medicines on animals is necessary and incredibly important. If we didn’t then a lot of the advances we have made in medicine and treatments wouldn’t have happened, or we would have tested them on humans and the humans would have died. The reason we have lots of people surviving cancer is because we have tested medicines on animals. And a lot of animal testing also helps to better understand and then treat animal illnesses as well, thats how we get animal medicines and how we ensure farm animals live a better life.

Personally I don’t agree with testing cosmetics on animals, or any other product which we don’t actually need. For medicines to be approved for human use they have to be tested on animals, there’s no way around this (at the moment) and I think this is vitally important to make sure that the medicines are safe. Cosmetics etc. are not something we can’t live without, medicines are, that’s where I’d make the distinction.
