Loadsssss of tests! Before you publish things you have to be 95% certain that it is true and not down to chance, so you have to do a lot of repeat experiments and a lot of different types of experiment to ensure you have the true answer. Then, once you are happy you submit your paper for publication and expert scientists look over it and say if its good or needs extra work doing (this is called peer review), if they like it then it gets published, if they don’t then you have to make corrections and do more experiments before you can submit it again for publication.
